Live telecast/web casting of Kisan Samman Nidhi-2020 Release of Next Installment

        The live webcasting was organized at KVK Sirsi on 25.12.2020. 54 farmers and 15 staff attended the programme arranged at KVK Sirsi. Nearly 350 farmers and 114 staff registered on pmevents portal for the program. Farmers were educated about registration procedure to the portal through whatsapp group, facebook, personal contacts.

Rabi Campaign and Walkthon on Women Empowerment

        To provide appropriate technologies with respect to rabi/summer crops and to create awareness on Rural Women Empowerment a campaign was organized by KVK UK Sirsi in collaboration with Dhan Foundation, Sirsi on 28.02.2019 at Namadeva Kalyan Mantapa, Banavasi, Sirsi Tq. The programme started with the walkthon on " Women Empowerment" through main road of Banavasi village. Nearly 250 farm women and farmers participated. During the technical session Production technolgies of major rabi/summer crops were discussed by the Scientist(Agronomy). The programme was witnessed by President Taluka Panchayat, President Gram Panchayat and officials of other line departments.

Skill Development Trainings

        25 days (200 hrs) Skill Development training programmes are organized on " Organic Farming" and " Bee Keeping" from 11th Feb 2019 to 7th Mar 2011. 40 (20 in each group) farmers/farm women participated in the training. During the event exposure visits to progressive farmers fields and bee keeping units. Guest lectures on organic cultivation, bee keeping aspects were organized by inviting specialised scientists, bee keepers.

State Level Spice Convention - 2018

        As continuation of our effort to help the farming community, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Uttara Kannada, Sirsi organized State Level Spice Convention at Sirsi on 26th February 2018 under financial assistance of CSS-MIDH scheme, in association with Farmers’ cooperative Societies like TMS, TSS and Kadamba Marketing, Research Institutions like HREC, CoH and CoF and Department of Horticulture (GoK). The main objective of the conference was to create awareness on post-harvest management and marketing aspects to meet international quality standards, promotion of organic farming and to create the platform for spice traders and spice growers. Spice traders involved in international trading like AVT McCORMIC Ingredients Pvt. Ltd. (Cochin), Synthite (Ernakulam), Unicorn Natural Products Ltd (Hyderabad), Sresta Natural Bioproducts Pvt. Ltd (Hyderabad), Big Basket (Bengaluru), Prakruti (Karwar), Phalada Agro (Bengaluru) were participated in the event.

       Shri. Kankodi Padmanabha, National Vice President, Sahakara Bharati inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp. In his inaugural address he opined that, Uttara Kannada district is one of the major contributor for quality spice production and there is huge demand in the international market for quality spices. This event has initiated the marketing channel by involvement of the growers, scientists, local market hub and the traders. He congratulated the organizers for conceiving such an event. Dr. V. I. Benagi, Director of Research, UAS, Dharwad inaugurated the exhibition and in his address he expressed that production of good quality produce is must while trading. This can be achieved only through good agricultural practices and post harvest technologies. He advised farmers to adopt organic cultivation and water and soil conservation techniques. Shri. Bhavaralal Arya, Incharge of Karnataka for Patanjali Groups participated as guest and informed that, in coming days Patanjali food park is planned to be established in Karnataka, which will definitely open the door to the farmers of this district with rich diversity. Dr. H. Basappa, Director of Extension, UAS, Dharwad presided the event. He informed that, UAS Dharwad through extension units like KVKs are involved in disseminating good agricultural practices and post harvesting technologies for production of quality produce through trainings and other extension activities. He also stressed for conservation of rich bio-diversity of the district, in this direction role of the farmers is very important.

     During the event, exhibition of live specimen of different varieties of black pepper, nutmeg, all spices, ginger, turmeric, essential oils and oleoresin of different spices were exhibited. Live demonstration of Post harvest machines was also organized. In the afternoon session the Technical Session was chaired by Dr. Venugopal, Principal Scientist (Rtd), IISR, Appangala who gave elaborated lecture on post harvest handling and production of quality spices with special emphasis on black pepper. Dr. L. N Hegde, Head, HREC, Sirsi gave information about the district scenario regarding various spice crops and other resource persons discussed about production technologies of different spices and international standards for trading. This event provided a platform for buyers and growers to share their views through interaction. The buyers specified the quality of the produce required for international trading and demand for organic produce. Nearly 600 farmers/farm women participated in the event. Dr. Manju M . J. Sr. Scientist & Head welcomed the guests and Dr. Santosh H. M. delivered the vote of thanks.

       Next day i.e., on 27.02.2018 a meeting was organized between the traders and the member of the local market hub to discuss about the future suitable marketing channels in the district. On the same day field visits were made to the plots of spice growers along with buyers. After seeing the cultivation practices and quality of the produce, the AVT has placed orders for procurement of 10 tones of ginger, 10 tones of turmeric and 5 tones of black pepper through Kadamba Marketing.

Paid Training to extension functionaries
on management of infertility through use of hormones in bovines

Infertility is a common problem in bovines under field condition and nearly about 20-30% animal suffer from this condition. Among the infertility, repeat breeding and anestrus are the major reproductive problems. Nowadays, many diagnostics treatment protocols are under use and few are under research pipeline. Hence, to create the awareness about the new treatment protocols a paid training programme on “ Use of reproductive hormones for management of infertility in bovines” is organised to the Veterinary Officers of Uttara Kannada district on 30.01.2018 at KVK, Sirsi. The training programme was inaugurated by Dr. Subray Bhat, Deputy Director, AHVS, Karwar. The programme was presided by Dr. Manju M J, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK, Sirsi and in his presidential remarks he stressed on the success of advanced treatment protocol being carried out to treat the infertile animals as part of KVK activity. During the technical session Dr. Santosh Shinde, Scientist(Animal Science) explained about the management of reproductive problems in bovines and dogs under field condition. Dr. P S Hegde, Private Practitioner, explained about induction of lactation in unproductive animals. 29 Veterinary Officer of from all the talukas of Uttara Kannada district participated in the training programme. Celebration of World Soil Health Day

ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Uttara Kannada, Sirsi Karnataka celebrated World soil health day at Sirsi on 5.12.2017 in collaboration with Karnataka State Dept. Of Agriculture and Totgar’s Co-operative Sale Society, Sirsi.  The programme was flagged off by lighting the lamp followed by worshipping the soil by Shri. Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri,  Hon’ble  MLA, Sirsi-Siddapur Constituency. In his inaugural address, he stressed upon organic farming and judicious use of natural resources.   Shri. Shantaram Hegde, President, TSS presided over the function. Dr. S. J. Patil, Dean, COF Sirsi, Shri. T H. Nataraj, DDA, KSDA, Sirsi and Dr. Laxminarayan Hegde, Head, Horticultural Research and Extension Station, Sirsi, Shri. S N Bhat, President, Krishika Samaja, Sirsi were present as Chief Guests.  Member of Zilla Panchayat and Taluka Pamchayat participated in the event as guests.  Dr. Mannjappa K., Professor (Agronomy), COF Sirsi and Dr. Rajakumar G R, Asst. Prof (Soil Science), Agri College, Dharwad participated as resource persons. 50 Soil health cards were distributed to the farmers.  Dr. Manjappa K. Dealt with organic farming, use of weeds in composting and soil conservation aspects.  Dr. Rajakumar gave information on importance of soil testing, soil sampling techniques, nutrition management in important crops of UK district and soil amendments. Farmers-Scientist interaction was organized where in farmers raised questions different issues related to nutrient management in arecanut, paddy, blackpepper etc. The discussion was very fruitful.  Nearly 353 farmers/farm women actively participated in the event.  Two technical publications on Water and Nutrient  Management in Arecanut, Banana and Scientific Production Technologies in Watermelon were released by guests and copies are distributed to the farmers. Dr. Manju M J, Sr. Scientist & Head welcomed the guest, programme concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Roopa S Patil, Scientist (Entomology) and Dr. Santosh H M, Scientist(Horticulture)  anchored the event.

Skill Development training on Grafting and Nursery Management in horticultural crops

Three days skill development training programme was organized at KVK Sirsi from 16.11.2017 to 18.11.2017. Dr. Santosh H M, Scientist (Horticutlure) organized the training programme.  More emphasis was given on the practical sessions so as to make the trainees to gain practical experiences on different grafting techniques like budding, grafting and air layering.  Management of commercial nurseries like seedling development in protrays, major pest and disease management in nursery stage of major horticulture crops, nutrient and water management etc. are also dealt during the event.  Exposure visit to nearby commercial nurseries was also organized.  37 farmers actively participated in the training programme.
